Why does my dog lick my kitten?

Yesterday, I got a new cat. He is 7 weeks old and cute as hell. I'm wondering why my dog constantly licks my cat. He follows him around and always sits and lies down with him. They are already fond of each other, and I think the licking may be a protective thing, along with lying down with the cat between his paws. I've been suggested it may be a mothering thing, because I know it's what a mother dog does to it's pups, and my dog may be doing the same thing. (Even though it's a male.) Anyone have any idea why he's doing this? I think I'll upload some pictures of my new cat too. :D

This is a way your dog has shown that he has excepted your new kitten and likes him. You won't find to many dogs that do this and kittens that would let a dog lick them like this they would hiss to try and show them who's boss. I think it's great that your kitten and dog get along so well and may it stay that way. Try and take some pictures of them two together for it would be nice to see. Enjoy your new kitten and have a good day take care.

I uploaded a few pictures of my kitten to myLot, but they were taking forever so I stopped uploading. I'll upload the ones I took with the 2 of them together right away.

You can look at my profile if you want to see them. I haven't quite figured out how to upload them to a discussion yet.

I believe your dog is just protecting the cat. I mean, the kitten probably doesn't clean itself so it does need help. Animals often adopt and parent animals from other species.
