Do truth serums really work ?

Reading about the crime branch taking help of truth serums to get information from the suspect, I sometimes wonder if it really works and whether the court upholds such a statement made under its influence. Do you really think such a thing exist which can make a person speak the truth and nothing but the truth. I wonder how it was invented. Would love to know more about it, if you are any wiser than me. kety.
