A Fight For Democracy?

June 19, 2008 12:38am CST
President Bush and his supporters have said that our soldiers are fighting to create and secure a democracy in a country that has never had one. What about the status of democracy in the USA?We cannot even trust that our votes in this country count. Between computerized voting and the electoral college how are Americans supposed to feel that we are really being heard by the people who count?Firstly, we cannot trust computerized voting systems. They have had too many flaws with them in the past and there is no way to prove who did what and when. I would rather stand out in the cold for two hours to punch a hole in a card that I can see and touch as opposed to trusting that the administrators are being fair. Be honest, it is not technology, it is not a computer - it is a human manipulating the computer. There should never be an endorsement made to a candidate by a computer voting company nor should the company ever be making statements about who they want to win. The best person would win because Americans would have chosen them. The electoral college was started with a good purpose, but it is not necessary anymore. I have friends that are from the UK and I try to explain to them how the popluar votes (the ones where American people stood in line for hours at some small elementary in the cold just to push a button and express themselves) don't count because we have electoral colleges that make the decision for us. It is rediculous! If 10 people voted for Harry and 5 voted for Sally I do not care what state or province they are in HARRY WON! PERIOD! THAT is a system where the people really do make the decision. That is a system men and women should fight for and that is a democracy that we should fight for at home. No matter how many battles our soldiers win or how bravely they fight for us, WE have the responsibility at home to elect the right people to protect them! FIGHT FOR YOUR OWN RIGHTS USA! Our soldiers do it abroad, so we need to do it here because the head politicians are not doing it for us! We are losing our democracy to big business and politicians. Lets take it back. We need to educate ourselves. I am just starting this movement for myself, so if anyone has tips for me or resources, please share them. I cannot sleep at night anymore knowing that my nephew and so many more Americans are in harms way to create a democracy in another country when we don't have a true democracy here.
