The Bayeux Tapestry is one action packed cartoon! It is a huge 70m long and 50cm wide. It tells the story of the Norman Conquest in 1066. Few people could read in the 11th century. The Tapestry showed them what happened in the Battle. The Duke of Normany, William the Conqueror. invaded England. The Tapestry shows the famous Battle of Hastings and is packed with 55 dogs, 623 humans, 202 horses, one comet and nearly 2,000 Latin words (no I haven't counted them)But you can go and look at the whole tapestry at www.bayeuxtapestry.org.uk and you can count! ART ON THE CARTS...... Before it was displayed in its own museum in the French town, Bayeux, the Tapestry had a lucky escape. In 1792, during hte French Revolution, the people fleeing Bayeux tried to use sections of it to cover their carts!! Just think all that history could have been lost!! Does anyone else know of any other large tapestries? Or are a group of you sewing one now?
