How do you explain Wicca to anyone?

I've come to the conclusion that explaining Wicca to me friends and family is simpliest when you show them that it is not far from the current religions. I tell them it that if it wasn't for paganism there would be none of the Christian faiths of today. I tell them that Wicca is another type of witchcraft just like there are many types of the Christian beliefs. I also tell them that in wicca that there is a peace in wicca just as there is in their religion and that it was by my own choice that I have committed myself to the religion. How do you explain wicca? Do you agree or disagree with my explaination? DCMerkle

I agree with your description. I simply tell them that it is a nature focused religion and that I live my life in doing what I feel is right by helping others and being 'eco- friendly' which they seem to get. I also tell them that each holiday can be traced back to pagans and that most medicines can too. I quickly explain Easter and Christmas origins and they are amazed but thats not to say they change their views. One time I pointed out that 'meditation' and 'visualization' are a form of spellcasting and that made sense to the person :)

cherkeygrl, I told someone that prayer was a form of spellcasting and I thought that she was going to faint. I had to ask her that with every prayer isn't she using her imagination about the positive happening in a prayer? She kind of got it, but still felt as if I was doing something wrong. I think that still to this day, she is trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. DCMerkle

LOl I know that feeling. Kinda tired of trying to make people understand that there is NOTHING wrong with me and that I am quite happy with my beliefs. I tryto keep my temper down but I swear at time I wanna turn around and start muttering gibberish just to shut them up lol. Oh well, peace is what I am striving for and it has to begin in me right. Blessed Be!

Hello DCMerkle, Its very hard to explain things to my family as they are christains, but I did say to them that pagan was the first religion and in many ways the christains rituals are copyied from the pagans. But my family just leave me alone, sometime, they make fun of me. They think I'm nuts.

DC, I think you did a wonderful job explaining it. I have always been interested in Wicca because my daughter is into it. But I have to be honest, I really don't know that much about it. I accept it because it is important to my daughter and I would like to learn more about it for her. As for myself, I don't attend church on a regular basis but I do believe in God and I do pray. I would find it hard to explain that to anyone also. Good job. If you can teach me more, I would really be interested.

i tell people that its an earth based religion and that we believe in many gods instead of one and that for some people (not me) their god can be one we reconize.. but i havent had much luck explaining it with out people asking if its witch craft.. i try to leave it out of my explaination just due to people and the stigma of it.. if they ask i tell them yes but i dont say that im a witch when i know that people dont understand to begin with and when they hear witch they tend to not hear a word after wards.. but that has been my experiences

A few years ago a guy me and my fiance knew had amom who is wiccan and she tried to teach it to us.. i didnt get it much but my fiance got it pretty quick. I guess it is more of the person. In my case i thought i knew what she was talking about but i really didnt. i tried to make myself see these things she was telling me and tried to do the things she told me to do but i dont think i actually got it. I think it goes along the lines of "some people get it some people dont" i dont think its all in the way you explain it. but then again i could be wrong.

I've found its difficult to explain Wicca. My friends and family sort of "get it." But anyone else just looks are you like you are a freak. I'm an adult, even a grandmother of two. So its not like I'm walking around in a black cape or wearing a tatoo on my forehead proclaiming myself to be a witch to the world. But occasionally someone I run into and get to know a little wants to understand more. Frequently I just tell them its a Pagan religion, very nature oriented. We too believe in God, AND the Goddess, and that our rituals are to us very much like a sunday service is to them. If they still don't grasp it or have further questions I'll refer them to some of my favorite websites to read more.
