You never want to purchase a pet simply for guarding purposes, they should be your companion and PART OF YOUR FAMILY. The way you see your dog is important; if you treat your dog with the love and respect it deserves, the dog will naturally protect you and will be willing to sacrifice its life for you. German Shepherds and Dobermans in particular, are extremely sensitive and in-tune to their owners feelings, they thrive on being close to those they love, and need this in order to perform well and be happy, please keep in mind that they are not simply to be used for guarding. Dobermans, do very poorly when they are placed day and night in the backyard as this breed is intolerant to cold weather conditions. These breeds are highly intelligent and many do make wonderful protective companions, provided they are placed into loving and educated homes where the owner can learn to grow with his or her pup. Working dogs need to be socialized young, stimulated, and shown love in a positive manner. They need to be trained with a firm yet gentle hand, and never punished or hit. These dogs have a tendency to want to become dominant, so you need to maintain the upper hand with them by always letting them know you are the "top dog". Hitting or scolding only initiates fear and aggression, and that is NOT what you want. You want a dog that will react to the right situations, a dog that is well rounded and friendly to those around him, yet still maintaining a wary eye. Too many large breed dogs end up in shelters today due to a lack of knowledge and understanding on the owner's part. Keep in mind that I am simply putting this comment out there to raise awareness and that by no means am I trying to discourage you from owning one of these beauties. Please EDUCATE YOURSELF ON THE BREED IN EVERY ASPECT YOU CAN, THESE BREEDS ARE NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! I WOULD NOT THINK ABOUT GETTING A DOG SIMPLY FOR PROTECTION AND IF THAT IS YOUR MAIN INTENTION THEN I SUGGEST YOU RELY ON YOURSELF... PUT BETTER LOCKS UP, REFRAIN FROM WALKING LATE AT NIGHT, OR FIND PEOPLE YOU CAN WALK WITH, ETC.

It just has to be a boxer! Big strong agile, no one will mess if you have a boxer, yet, boxers are the peter pan of the dog world, they just never grow up. mine is four nearly and as mad as a hatter. very friendly, loving, loyal, playful. Once you've had a boxer you won't want anything else. As for naming him, well, there are loads of boxers past and present to name him after.

well if it is protection you want then doberman but if you want protection and fun then German shepherd are also great. i have a pomerian and german mixed breed at my home. i am not good in naming so only roger, rocky, blackie (if it's black) or brownie (if somewhat brown). Salmo and mohi would be a bit different but nice names too.

Why get a dog to protect you? For protection, fix your locks on the doors, lock the windows and get an alarm! Dogs are to be loved and played with. Get a BASSETT HOUND! (Or Blood Hound!) I've had a bassett on and off for over 40 years! They bark LOUD, so no one will mess with you anyway, even though the dog wouldn't hurt a flea. And they are SO saggy and cute..who couldn't love them? (GREAT family pets!) But their LOUD bark scares most people away! They just hear it through the door and don't know what is there, (sounds BIG and mean) so they do not bother you. But YOU would have a great doggy friend! I had the meter man last week RUN! When he saw he actual dog..he turned red! LOL! There are many bassett hound rescue places online in your area. They are almost free for the taking from rescue and some are puppies or only a year or so old! But wonderful companion pets..and LOUD! If you want protection in the home, but something safe for the family, a bassett hound is what you need! Once in a while, even though they are usually expensive dogs, one may even turn up in the dog pound in your area? If they get loose and the owner forgets to check the pound, you can sometimes get one there! (Cheap..but pure bred!) (For the name? They are a "slow" dog, so "Flash" is great. Or how about Sherlock? LOL!-It's all about having FUN!-I knew a lady that named hers Queen Elisabeth! HA!) The key is a loud dog, but a safe one around you and he family! And a bassett will make you laugh. They get running and tend to trip on their own long ears! ENJOY! (So cute!-SOO LOUD and tough sounding!)-Once you have ownerd one, you won't want any other kind for protection or anything else!
