This was growing on the ground in the woods in the Nature Center I walked in this past weekend. It is about a foot across and maybe an inch and a half thick. Does anyone know what type of mushroom/fungus it is possibly? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

It looks like the types I used to pick when I was a little girl, we used to go mushrooming a lot, in those days there were two things to look for, mushrooms and toadstools, and even we kids knew the difference but today there are so many mushrooms and some of the normal looking ones can be poisonous...what a pity, mushrooms are beautiful, you could make a nice pot of mushroom soup with that one...

I would have no idea what is good to pick and what isn't. But this was so cool looking. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I don't know what kind it is but it looks similar to the ones I see growing around here. When I lived in a trailer park I had a neighbor that use to pick mushrooms behind my trailer and get high off of them. I don't think these were the same ones though but not sure. This looks like the kind that I see growing in my yard here when the weather is rainy.

I really do not have skills in the mushroom and fungus field. I have seen several lately, including one at my brother's house that was kind of cute. The largest mushroom I have heard of is like five miles across and is near Crystal Falls,Michigan. They even have a Humongous Fungus festival every year.

I am glad to say I am not an expert in the fungus field as well. I have small ones growing in my lawn from all the mopisture and heat. I just break them up as I walk through the grass. But this one was huge and kind of cool looking I felt. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

wow a foot across is massive! from the picture it looks like a shitake mushroom. which is a japanese breed of edible mushroom. but as with all mushrooms do not try to eat them or cook them unless totally certain. lots of danger out there. having said that, i love mushrooms. i know some people who absolutely hate them. can't understand why that is at all!
