What can I do to save my carpet?

My beloved Maltese, Snow is driving me crazy! Snow is 2 yrs old and I have not been able to break him of chewing things! I have to make sure there is nothing on the floor as he will make it his toy! If I leave shoes he will chew them! But I am used to the floor being blank! This latest problem is getting me! He has started biting the carpet, so there are several dime size spots that I have in my carpet because it pulled up the fibers! This is driving me crazy and I am not sure what makes him all of a sudden start to do this. It doesn't matter how many chew toys I buy him, right now he chooses to chew the rug. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why he is now doing this or what I can do to stop him from chewing on anything but his toys? Please help!

I don't know about dogs behavior, don't have one. But just an idea, get rid of the rug, or get him a mate. He might like to chew on his mate.

I have no pets but I think the best way is to consult the vet.
