Is sport as good or not as good as it was before?

I have heard so many reports that sport today has been ruined by money and business. A person of an older generation had recently voiced his opinions on football to me: he said that since football teams became businesses, footballers have become more scared to attempt to score a goal, as a missed goal, according to him, means that the football club looses money. And in another example, in boxing there used to be one world champion per weight division and that was that. Nowadays, you have several world champions per weight division. Boxers earn more money as champion, as does the promoters, but I feel that all these champions per weight division has removed the spirit and meaning of the competitive nature of boxing; it has removed the need and desire of proving oneself as the best in the world. What do you think? Has money ruined sport? Or is it as good as it was in the good ol' days?
