Last year my family and I and my mom who was visiting us all sang christmas carols over the phone. We called family and friends and sang christmas carols to them. They all loved it! We had to sing it while looking at the lyrics on the computer because we didn't know all the words. What do you think? Would you do this?

No, I would never do this as it just does not seem very sincere. It's like wishing your girlfriend/wife a happy birthday/anniversary by telephone. If you really cannot be there in person to sing the carol, I can understand otherwise you should avoid the insincerity of telephone carol singing.

We couldn't afford to travel during that time and all the family and friends we sang to live in a different state. All of our family and friends loved and enjoyed it.

For that I can understand. Skype is often a blessing in disguise when it comes to times like that. It's great to see the person who is wishing you a merry Christmas and singing the carols.
