How to clean the dark patchs in the Iron

Im sure most of us here do our laubdry n ironing as well.Lately while ironing one of my shirt it got burned as there were dark stains from earlier burns and as this area got heated and came in contact with the clothes it leaves some crease as well at some times.Can anyone plese telll me how can i clean those areas of iron without damaging the iron. Thanks for suggestions..in advance
