Harkers opened my e-mail and used my account to send and receive messages!

Hi, This was a statement used by some people sometimes ago,can someone's email be opened at his back without him or her knowing of it.I understand that if you are careless with your code some other people could get it and use it but this one that i'm writing about was a claim by sevral people who are suppose to pay up for what they had bought from me but unfortunately all of them claimed that their email account and their account that was used to buy something were been used by some other people;so they refused to pay,however i had sent their items which they bought digitally into the account that they provided me through their e-mail and i have the proof that they received the items.
