FEMA Trailers Blamed For Illnesses

I had not heard this until now so I was wondering how many of you are aware of this problem. It seems that the survivors of Hurricane Katrina who were housed in the trailers have been coming down with strange symptoms that have been linked to high levels of formaldehyde contained in these trailers. They are showing symptoms such as respiratory distress that have been directly linked to formaldehyde. These trailers were tested by the Sierra Club who concluded the levels are dangerously high, posing a real threat that could lead to cancer. Now a bill has been introduced into congress that would come up with a solution such as in the case of the workers who came down with symptoms after working at Ground Zero. Do you think that this could have all been prevented had the government properly tested these trailers before purchasing them?

There is formaldehyde in all campers. I cannot imagine that they planned on people staying in them as long as they have.

I was unaware of this, Thoroughrob, and I do not feel they should still be in those trailers.

I'd heard about this a few months ago and the idea that nothing still has been done about it infuriates me! The worst part is while some people are already showing ill effects it's the long term effects that will possibly really hit a huge number of them. If they were from another country we'd probably have taken better care of them, sadly. Annie

It does seem, anniepa, that our government rushes to the aid of others when a disaster occurs while they drag their feet when it is their own people involved.

I was trying to find it...but I did a discussion about this some time ago....yup I was aware of the FEMA trailers being "hazardous" to the health of those displaced people due to the Katrina incident...here's a real blast though..FEMA is planning to set up trailers now for those displaced due to all the recent floods in the mid-west....like duh? Can't help just wonder where are the trailers made and yes, why didn't the govt test the trailers? ah..just found it... http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1406762.aspx?p=1

It makes one wonder, pyewacket, why the government doesn't set up a committee to research other means of accommodation for future reference. I remember hearing on a radio talk show about a man who said he offered his company's services for rebuilding the area but was refused by the government.
