Ancient romans to modern Italians

Does anyone know when did the romans stop speaking Latin and start speaking Italian....this has been wrecking my head for years.

This is a very good question. Apparently the answer lies in the fact that the Romans may only have used Latin in writing, but that the original latin had split into many dialects throughout the empire. Look up "Vulgar Latin" on Wikipedia.

I am informed by an Italian colleague that spoken Latin was quite different to written Latin at the time of Cicero
