Which of the following styles of thinking do you use the most? Convergent: In this style there is one correct answer or solution. This style is most associated with stadardized tests. Divergent: In this style there are many answers; and it is characteristic of Creativity. Me, I think I am mostly a divergent thinker, I don't think there is just one answer for most problems or questions in life. The only time I think differently would be like when I was in college and had to take exams, I always knew that there was one correct answer, and it was my job to know or figure out which answer was correct. And even then, in some cases, I would find myself questioning that logic, because there were many times that I knew there was only one *correct* answer theoretically, but in my mind there would be several correct answers. I was thinking also what places in life use the different styles of thinking. I think Convergent thinking is seen largely in our law and order systems, our religious and moral systems. Then Divergent thinking is obviously seen in art, music, etc.. all the creative areas, but I also think that it is applicable in the areas of sociology and psychology. Sure, there are theories in those areas that say, this happens for this reason, but at the same time there are so many theories because not everyone believes that things happen for a concrete reason. Therefore, I do believe if one has an open mind and is a free thinker, they probably use divergent thinking most the time. I think both thinking styles are very important, but I also think that because we all have our own variations of these styles, that is most likely why we as humans get so passionate and defensive about our opinions. It's really like comparing mechanical thinking with creative thinking, the mechanical thinker a lot of times can't or will not bend or compromise easily, and then the creative thinker can be more sensitive at times because we may feel like we are being attacked by the others. Anyway, I would love to hear what kind of thinking you use, and where you see these kinds of thinking in life. I want to hear all views on this, because thinking is so important in life. Every one of us have important ideas and opinions, and they should be heard. If you made it through this discussion, you are amazing, and I can't wait to hear what you have to say!
