Well, I'm new to mylot and thought I'd start a discussion. The economy has been getting bad, as we all know, and many of us are feeling the impact. So, I thought I'd post some tips on frugal living! I plan to post one a day for now, and then when I'm caught up with the ones I've posted in my lilaguide group, I'll post them once a week here as well. I'd love to hear any of your tips as well. When grocery shopping, get the sales flyer before shopping and plan your week's meals around whatever meat is on sale. Create a recipe/box file and sort the recipes by main ingredient. So, the next time that variety of meat is on sale, you can go to your recipe box and pull several recipes that can be made around that variety of meat. Obviously you'll want to keep adding to that file so you don't get bored with the same thing all the time, but at least it gives you a place to start. I also keep a handy "shopping list" of regularly used ingredients so I can watch for sales on those items and stock up when they go on sale. Also, some people have freezer space available to buy large quantities of meat - like purchasing 1/2 a beef - and can save money that way. Unfortunately that is not an option for me, but I do remember my parents doing that when I was growing up. What do you do to save money on groceries?

in the same vein as that, we buy a majority of our meat from a butcher which saves quite a bit, plus, we plan our meals for the coming two weeks before we go grocery shopping, which also helps.

I wish I had a butcher nearby! But, I don't so the grocery store or club stores is it for me! But, definitely shopping with a specific list is best.

Your advise on frugal living is very timely-things are just too expensive here now-even the meat you talk about most families in Uganda cant afford, so buying in large quantity is out of the question!

Good point. I forget that this site is not just for the United States! However, I known even here in the US, I can't afford to buy large quantities of meat either! In fact I'm trying (not very successfully) to get my family to convert to vegetarian meals at least 1-2 times per week.

I buy store brands and also generic brands of food. I cook everything from scratch and don't buy any frozen dinners, etc.

I also buy some store brands, but I've often found that when I combine sales and coupons I can get better deals on name brands. And I only buy store brands from some stores, as I don't like some of them! I must admit I occasionally buy frozen meals for lunches, but ONLY when they are on sale with coupons where I can get them for less than $2 each!
