Is that old fashioned?

I have been married now for six years. I hear so many people talk about getting along with the in-laws. I feel sometimes that this thought process is outdated. I have never gotten along with my in-laws but I can say that it would help me out to be a little better with them at times. I still hold to my guns and say that this is an old washed up way of thinking. "I don't care what your mother said, your father is stupid, your brother should get a job, and I KNOW your sister is kidding, right?" Is it just me? Do you feel it is ethnic? Is it religous? Who came up with this one?
