choosing a job

If given two choices, what would you choose, a job that you are happy about but one that gives you a lower income or a job that you don't enjoy doing but earns you more?

I definitely would - and did - chose the job that I enjoyed going to work even though it pays less money. A job is a place where you spend the majority of your day and it can have the same effect on a person that an extremely unhappy marriage can have. As soon as I quit the higher paying job (I was there for twelve years), my headaches were gone and my imagination came back to me. I was no longer a zombie merely going through the motions. Of course, I am now trying hard to pay off my bills but I am happier than I have been in quite some time.

Thank you for taking time to comment and for sharing your experience. Actually this is my second job and i also left my first work because i did not enjoy anymore for a lot of reasons. This one pays more and everything has been going on perfectly for a long period of time till now when teamwork and professionalism has declined. Now, i am trying my best to look for another one but i just can't jump into just anything because i have a family to think about... and job opportunities are limited in my country.

This is such a tough question. The thing about jobs that pay more is that the more you earn, the more likely you are to get laid off during bad times. It's much less stressful to enjoy what you do everyday. I mean, we do spend most of our lives working, might as well enjoy it!

Thanks for your answer. From the replies i got, yours included, it makes me realize that it takes a lot of factors to be considered to answer which one to choose. One just have to weigh the situation (economy perhaps) and other personal circumstances before coming up with an answer.

Work satisfation is parmount. If you find that the work makes you happy and excites you, then you give it that much more effort. That also gives you the possibility of being recognised and then earning more in the form of rewards or promotions. On the other hand if your job is paying you more but you do not get that satisfaction, you are most likely to quit or find disfavour with your superiors because of your lack of interest.

This time to me ,I'll choose the higher salary job.Because I still young and have enough enegy to work hard and bare some challenge. But,when I have enough money,I'll choose a lighter job.

Actually, it's not that easy to come up with an answer if we were made to choose which one cuz there's a lot of factors that we have to consider... like in your case you say you are young and full of energy. There is that intrinsic motivation that made you choose your decision. Thanks for your honest reply.

I would, and did, choose the one that pays less but is more enjoyable or had less stress. A happy worker is a great worker

For now, I'd choose a job I wouldn't enjoy much but pays more. I'm a flexible person so I *might* like the job in the future. When I've earned enough to sustain myself from passive income, then I can switch to a job I enjoy... and that would be humanitarian work.
