What is the Point of Emergency Rooms?

Emergency Room - This sign is supposed to mean that you will be treated as quickly as possible for the pain or injury you are experiencing. Sometimes, that is not the case.

Are we treated like we have emergencies when we go to the emergency room? A patient was left waiting almost 24 hours and ended up dying on the floor, where she was for almost an hour before being helped. This is unacceptable and crude, especially when she was ignored by security guards and a doctor when she had collapsed on the floor. Surveillance reveals that one guard didn't even leave his chair, rolling it around the corner to stare at the body and rolled away a few moments later. Eventually a nurse came to check on her and nudged her with her foot to see if she responded. Are you serious? I know not all hospitals treat patients like this, but something has to be done so that it doesn't happen again. There is no reason why someone should wait that long to be treated. After all, we don't go to emergency rooms for a routiine check-up. What are your thoughts?

My coworkers and I were talking about this story a few days ago. I think that emergency rooms treat people according to their problems, like if I was bleeding profusely I would be treated quickly and before someone with a sore throat~even if they were there first. It is possible that some hospital staff don't realize how severe someones condition is based on apperances. However this hospital was clearly negligent and should be held accountable.
