Has anyone forgone swimming lessons for their children and taught them how to swim on your own? I dont have the funds for swimming lessons and was wondering if anyone has had success with this. Jenn

My children goes to a public School (majority). But in some private Schools they provide swimming as part of the lessons in school. During december is when I can take my boys for one day recreation. And can do whatever they want. Concerning my involvement I have never thought them on how to swim I only tell them as a story that we used to swim in rivers back in the village.

I don't believe that children younger than about 4 or 5 have the coordination or strength for swimming, or the attention span or comprehension for formal swimming lessons. Toddlers should be supervised very closely, and you can show them a few strokes to try, but I would wait until they are old enough to get the full benefit from lessons before spending the money.
