Why do people abuse their own children

I have read before a book its written by dave pelzer.Inside the book,he wrote about how his mum has abused him.As i was reading..couldnt just stop crying.Why do people abuse their own children?Dont they love them?If they dont,just dont give birth to them in the first place.
