International cell phones?

I was curious if anyone has a cell phone or is with a cell phone company that would work overseas without costing a ton of money (for the record, my home is in the States). Mostly I'm interested in phones that would work over in far eastern Asia- China, Japan, Korea and so on. Any tips, or should I just rent a cell phone if/when I go over there? Thanks for your help.
