Why does my computer keep restarting after I try to play a downloaded video?

Everytime I download either a harmless music video or video alone and try to play it through RealPlayer 10 Or VeohTV or just import said video to Windows Movie Maker, my computer /restarts/ all by itself no matter what I do to stop it. And the only thing I've done lately was increase my computer memory, updated my AVG FREE program to 8.0 but that's it. I tried looking for the source to this problem but I'm still stumped. Is it my fault or is it my computer? I use Windows XP and my computer's around 4 years old so I doubt it would be busting just yet right? I don't think I can download anything harmless to watch again if I don't fix this. Advice anyone?

Hi there, it might be because of the antivirus. I had AVG installed in my laptop and believe me, your lucky to even watch something. Mine would automatically shut down when I try to go online. It might not be compatible. What I did was I uninstalled the antivirus and put something else. It worked. Afterwards, there were no more unexpected shutdowns. Try it. I hope it'll solve your problem.

Oh really? Aww, that's too bad... 8.0 looks like a pretty good antivirus program with all the antispyware, daily scans, shields and all. May I ask what program did you replace AVG with?

If you need an anti-virus, I believe kaspersky is currently the best. NOD32 is not a bad choice either (not as good) since it is lightweight on system resources.

Since you've stated you just added a RAM to it then maybe that is causing the problem. Carefully check that one and make sure they(old & new RAM) match in terms of speed or just maybe there is a problem with its contact. If you did checked and its fine then then optimize your PC, use system tuning or a registry fix, do a scandisk and if needed do a disk defrag. Good luck CloudyySkies and welcome to mylot.

System manage is just fine, There are time when I encounter this, it just due to RAM are not properly inserted in their sockets and while your at it check that they are of the same type and speed speed say both are PC3200 or something. Check also your processor fan if its working properly sometimes heat can cause this.

I set my RAM to System-managed, does that make a difference? And thank you!

This can be caused by alot of things. Try and verify these ones out: 1. Faulty RAM (do a test with something like memtest) 2. Corrupt drivers/codecs (try installing new ones, a good codec pack is K-lite Megacodec pack, for example) 3. Anti-virus (replace it) and many other options... Hope this helps out.
