Do you think McCain was the best Republican nominee?

I was just wondering if anyone would have rather had a different Republican nominee and why?... I myself will vote Democrat this year... and I was undecided until I heard all of John Mcain's war talk.... So, does anyone think that a different Republican would have had a better shot and why?

I think Mitt Romney was a candidate that was a people person and actually believed in his platform. I like Mccain as well but when I saw Mitt I just believed him and thats what put me on his side if I were going to vote for a GOP candidate.

These days about the only Republicans I have any contact with are here on myLot so I'm far from an expert on this but it seems that many aren't totally satisfied with McCain. It's ironic, many of the conservative Republicans claim he's too liberal but as Democrat I sure don't see that in him at all! Whatever the case, there's no way I'd vote for McCain regardless and I didn't like any of the other Republicans running either. I know a lot of people here really liked Ron Paul and I did agree with some of what he said especially about the war - he was the only GOP candidate who wasn't all gung-ho about staying in Iraq forever - but I think he's a bit too conservative for my taste when it comes to social issues. To be honest, I don't know if any of the other Republicans would have had a better shot in the general or not since things aren't looking too good for the party these days. The McCain that ran in 2000 probably would have had the best chance in November but he doesn't seem like the same person today. Even I liked him in some ways back then! Not enough to vote for him but at the time I would have preferred him over Bush, and that was BEFORE I know what I know now...lol! Annie

Wow, I'm so glad you made the point that the John McCain that ran for President in 2000 is very different from the John McCain that is running today. I'm not a fan of the Republican party but I used to like McCain. I respected the fact that he really went to war (unlike someone who was AWOL from the National Guard.) I respected him for his passion in taking on causes like campaign finance. More importantly, as the Bush administration decided to flush everything that is good about America down the toilet, John McCain stood out as a man who was against things like "torture" stating that it simply does not work or make us safer than terrorism. If you look through all these facts about the John McCain that ran in 2000, I could say that John McCain not only deserves the Republican Nomination, the man would deserve the presidency. However, the McCain is 2008 seems to be a very different man, particularly in his new stance on torture. It's actually quite disturbing to see a man who was always known as a man of principle 'sell-out' Is he the best Republican? Perhaps Mit Romney may have been better and perhaps a better president. However, I gues we're looking at the candidate that can win votes, and its seems that McCain looked like the only person who could have beaten Hillary and Barak Obhama. Other than Guiliani, McCain had a wide national 'brand' name as opposed to being only well known in a particular state. So, if you look at the possible electoral college math rather than the issue of principles, McCain was the best the party had to offer.

wow, the two of you make some really excellent points! First of all, I just want to say that I am definitely not voting Republican this year... I have enjoyed the fact that it has been a very historical path to the nomination.. but I am afraid of what would happen to this country if a Repbulican were elected right now.. of course I could be wrong about that, but I guess we will see in the months and years to come... but besides that, you know I never got too much of a good vibe from any of the Republican candidates this year. I do agree that John McCain was the only possible electible candidate for the Republican party this year.... Thanks for your comments!:)
