What exactly does it means by "A mind is a terrible thing to waste"

Somehow I never really understand this phrase, but always shake my head and say yes when people quote it to me. I have tried to reason it out, but it don't just make sense to me at times. Do enlighten me MyLotters - thanks in advance.

Never stop learning, never stop asking questions and looking for answers. That is what it means to me. Never be satisfied to just be always look for something else to make it better.

I agree that we should never stop learning! It's the best way to retain a healthy mind and make it stronger!

I agree with both of you! That reminds me of the saying "You're never too old to learn"

It means, use your brain. If you have one, don't waste it, use it. Think about things.

My view: we are all born with a mind to use, some have better minds than others do, but if we have a good, strong mind but don't live up to our potential to use it, then it is wasted! Many people have strong minds but aren't able to afford an education; but an intelligent person can always education himself (or herself) if they have the desire. To not use our mind to its fullest potential is wasting a precious gift that God has given us.

This is very well put. I think, however, that in some circumstances it is difficult for intelligent people to get an education, even a self given one. Poverty, lack of study materials, culture and many other reasons can make it difficult to learn. I think that the saying is perhaps to remind us, as a society, to work at ensuring that all good minds get access to a proper education.

Thanks for your comment, you have made some valid points especially in regards to an individula educating themself. I know people who do not have an education, but have taught themself stuff in order to work for themself and survive.

we are mindlessly wasting our mind over here for making it work, unmindful of the fact, what our posts will fetch us, even after wasting our minds here..LOL!. I think the quote means - People, when do not get the desired results, appear to be wasted their minds.

In my point of view our mind is like our CPU it doesn't require a person who have knowledge about computer to feed it the things so that a person can have the tools he needs in his computer.Even a person without a formal education about computer can do that. What i am trying to say is that it doesn't matter if you don't have a money to put yourself in the school what really matters is your drive or your will to learn .It becomes wasted if you don't educate yourself once in a while just like what we are doing right now.And if you are intelligent and use it to harm or hurt people or animals then it become a wasted mind.
