Questions about getafreelancer and odesk

Hi, everyone! Well, I've been keeping an eye out for a way to make some extra money online, and it seems I've finally found one or two websites that seem worth bookmarking- i.e. Get A Freelancer and O Desk. The latter especially seems very professional with hourly rates and what have you.
Well, as a starting freelancer, I have questions for those of you who have a bit more experience in the sites.. and even questions for those of you who don't!
-Do you use either of these sites?
-How often do you get jobs?
-Ever been scammed on either?
-What tips do you have for a new user/freelancer?
-Are there any other sites out there similar to these?
-If you have yet to sign up on either of these, would you/will you?

I signed up for both of those, I don't use Odesk that much but must start doing so a bit more however I have used getafreelance but not lately as they have told me I need to pay them some money but am not sure what for! Anyway I did get a job with them but it all went wrong for me, guess I was just unlucky, I had to sell suff on ebay for a company in another country and it ended up costing me money so I've told them i can no longer do that for them however I still have their money as don't know where to send it and they are not emailing me anymore, it is very frusrating as I just want to get it over with.

I have never tried either of these sites, but it could be worth it if you have time. I mostly write for Associated Content as I am in the USA, but sometimes it can be hard to get an Article accepted there.
