Restore to factory settings

Everytime there's a glitch in my iPod, it asks me to restore its factory settings. Okay, It's like with formatting the computer, so I get it. IT still sucks that I have to do that.
But lately, I have been asked to do that more and more often.
Now, my iPod is the old iPod mini. I had it ever since it came out. So I am wondering. Is it the iPod's way of saying I should get a new one? Did it got broken and restoring factory settings can no longer help???
