Why do I have to select for best response?

I've been posting some topics here already. As I was reading replies in the discussions I have started, it says at the bottom of my discussion, "user has not selected a best response". Why do I have to do it? If I select a best response, would the topic be closed? and no one could respond to it once best response has been selected?

People can still respond to the topic. You don't have to do it but it gives the responder a higher rating and more money.

When you select a best response your discussion will be resolved but it will not be closed and you can still get new responses.
You can leave a discussion unresolved for as long as you want. It's much better to wait a week or so rather than mark a best response within a few hours of starting the discussion.
It can put some people off responding if they see the best response has already been awarded.
