Getting forgetful as we get older

July 18, 2008 11:55am CST
I often wonder about people being forgetful as they get older! I have this theory that space in our memories gets filled up as we age which is why older people can often remember what happened fifty years ago but can't recall what they did yesterday! Wha do other people think about this?

my problem is i was forgetful starting as a teenager. but what kept me going is that i had to write things down. regarding what you said for some people it is a matter of only so much space and so things get bumped out. and of course the mind doesn't work like it used too. my mother remembers things better from when she was young.

i'm only 22 and i forget things all the time so there's no hope for me, i often go upstairs to get something and then forget what i wanted when i get there! hehe i have done some work in nursing homes and love listening to the residents talking about days gone by, it's wierd though that they can remember those things in such detail but not be able to tell you what they had for breakfast!

i know what you're saying. i kept hearing people say the minute someone couldn't remember something that they were getting older. i would think that wasn't right and they don't know what they're talking about. because even as a child i wasn't good at memorizing things and started to be forgetful. yes some people have such good memories until they get older then become forgetful. but for me it won't be that big of an adjustment. but i have good habits to remind myself of things and that makes a difference. i've had plenty of practice.

you're staying on top of it. people who need to do that and don't have bad reputations for being untrustworthy and irresponsible. their promises are worthless. i know some people like that and have had to work with them. they are walking disasters. the people who think we're crazy don't realize how blessed they were when they were born.

my problem with forgetting stems from not sleeping all that well. its amazing what is affected when you dont sleep well. but i do like your theory though! my brain is just full up!:-)

I don't sleep all that well either and i find that lack of sleeps means you forget things and hust generally get worse at doing everything!! am not sure the mind really works that way but it's i nice little idea i guess! :-)

Hello,Munchkin!Forgetfulness is a stage which we enter with aging.as we grow old our sleep duration reduces because of several factors and sleeplessness contribute to forgetfulness fatigue and related diseases.so it is prescribed by the doctors that elderly people should sleep maximum five hours and eat balanced and nutritious foods with a view to keep the body and mind fit.thanx.

I have noticed that people seem to need less sleep as they get older! i guess we have to work a little harder at everything as we get older and older!!
