Fishing and the Moon

Does the moon really play any part in whether or not the fish are biting? I've heard many different opinions about this but I don't know what to believe.

it's a fact that the moon according to chinese calendar determine the tide. fishing at different tides means different water conditions. i.e. stationary water after tide is full will mean that the smaller fishes (baits to the larger predator) are not moving. as such, the predator will not come. With that the better time to fish is when the tide is rising - 4-5 before the highest tide.

hi,fishing in rivers and lakes are very different, not to mentioned that the species and behaviour are different tool. for a start, different species are active in days and nights. as such, you really know to know what kind of fish that u are targetting, land based or from boat fishing and of cos, tide if applicable

Thank you for your response Ibert33. That does make a lot of sense. But how about the rivers and the lakes? I know the moon must affect them as well, but surely not in the same way as the oceans since they are usually land-locked.

I base my fish outings on the moon. I go normally all 4 saturdays in a month and sometimes leave one of those out if it falls on a day where the #'s are low. I fish in a lake that is actually a river damed up. I have caught my largest fish (bass) on days before after or during a full moon. Especially at night under a full moon

I have heard all my life and I definitely believe the moon affects the fish. After all, if the whole ocean is affected by the moon, why not those living creatures in it and the rivers as well. There are a variety of different opinions though as to just how the moon affects fishing.

Thanks for your response jer31558. I've caught fish on a full moon and I've caught fish on a new moon as well as all the other phases of the moon. I've also done the opposite. So you couldn't prove it by me. It's interesting to speculate though.

I might add, though, that the same people who tell me the fish bite good on a full moon, are also the type of people who tell me that if cattle are laying down in the field instead of grazing, I shouldn't go fishing because they will not be biting.

I think that it would be interesting to hear how such saying actually got their start.

Moon will not have any affect on the fish. Moon affects only the ocean not the living organisms in it. Even the affect of moon on ocean is just a gravitational pull nothing more than that, so it will not have any affect on its organisms. Moon is not only attracting the ocean it is attracting the earth. If moon is affecting fish, it should affect even humans too. I never heard a case regarding this.

Thank you for your response duttmyneni. I tend to feel the same way but I am still open to some kind of scientific proof from a scientific source.

yes the moon does play a role in whether the fish bite or not. ive found that when there is a full moon i catch a lot more fish than usual. fish sense the moon phases and breed and feed according to the moon.

I've noticed no appreciable difference, at least where fresh water is concerned. It's been many years since I lived near the ocean but I was just a kid then and never paid much attention. I would love to see some scientific research on this subject.
