Yesterday was NOT a fun day!

Well, ever since we got back from vacation - a week ago yesterday - I have been having problems breathing. It started on the way home from the Outer Banks. I would just every now and then have to take this deep breath but it wasn't like any of the air was getting in. This happened to me before - in early May - on our way home from Key West. But, that time it went away after a couple days so I figured it would this time too. Well, yesterday at a wedding I kept getting very light-headed and had to sit down a couple times or I was going to pass out. I had already planned on going to the doctor today, but after how I felt in church I figured it would be best to get medical attention yesterday. Right after the mass, I called Nighttime Pediatrics (they take adults also and it's usually quicker than going to the hospital) and told them what was happening. They said to call 911 and get to the emergency room. We were on the road anyways, so we just went straight to the hospital. They took me right away and started some tests. First was a breathing treatment, figuring it was asthma. I did that with zero results. They took blood to run all kinds of tests. Then they did a CAT scan checking for blood clots in my lung. Although I went back for that right away also, it was an hour or so before they came back to tell me everything was ok. The blood tests also showed that I my iron was fine, everything was ok. So then they tried a muscle relaxant and anti-inflamitory, trying to get my lungs to calm down a bit and that did nothing. So then they wanted to check my blood from an artery to see if it had enough oxygen in it. The first time they tried to do that was NOT fun. Apparently my blood would not come out and it would clot right away when it did. So they weren't sure if they were going to try again, but I told them to go ahead, I have another arm. It didn't work in my other wrist, but after a while in the inside of my elbow it worked. And that test told us that my blood was getting enough oxygen so there's no reason I should be breathing like I am. There wasn't much else they could do for me so they sent me home and told me to check up with my regular doctor in the next 2 days. When they first went to release me my blood pressure was out the roof so I had to wait a while and try again for it to be normal before they would let me go. All day long it had been normal so they started to worry that something else was wrong now. Well, it came back to normal and after 7 hours in the hospital and being no better off than when I got there, I went home. We stopped for dinner because our plans for the day were to get groceries and that wasn't going to happen now. By the time we got home it was around 7pm, I watched TV for a little bit and was falling asleep so I just went to be at about 8pm. Both alarm clocks woke me up this morning - 5:20 and 5:50am - but I went right back to sleep. My husband called me at 8am to see how I felt. I got up, called the doctor to make an appointment, then called my boss to tell him I wouldn't be in. I'm now waiting for the doctor to call me back - they have to get the information from my hospital visit yesterday. My doctor is not in, but I may see the doctor that takes her calls, or I may have to wait until tomorrow. Personally, I think I'm having an alergic reatcion to the sunscreen. I tried a new kind when we were in Key West and thought I had a reaction to it, although I thought it went away. I used a different sunscreen for the rest of that trip and for my trip to the Outer Banks. I asked the emergency room doctor if it could be an alergic reatcion but she kinda brushed that off. I just hope we can get this figured out soon!

Thank goodness everything turned out good with your tests. Maybe the doctor will check into it more about the sunscreen and see if it is a reaction since that is the only two times it has happened to you. Hopefully you can report back soon with even greater news on what caused your problems. Take care of yourself.

I'm hoping I can get in to the doctor today. I feel bad not going to work (and playing on the computer instead) so I'm going to work tomorrow. I'm really taking it easy today just waiting for the Dr. to get back wtih me. If they'll test me for the sunscreen alergy just to shut me up I'd be happy - even if that wasn't the problem.

I really hope that this is sorted out soon for you, too...please be very vigilant, and insist your Dr. get to the bottom of this! Anaphylactic shock, can produce these types of symptoms....that is shock caused by an allergy! I would also, my dear be inclined to keep a food/surrounding environment/air quality diary! You may find that there is something in common with your reactions! And, YES, topical applications of many ingredients can certainly produce reactions! Does taking an anti-histamine (OTC) help?

Tried an antihistamine earlier in the week - nothing so I quit taking it after a couple days. I have been keeping track of what happened in both occasions, but the only things that were similar that did not happen in between is the sunscreen. And being close to exhaust fumes.

Now see, the first thing I thought of was allergy. I did not think of sunscreen. Tell me, are you using an aerosol sunscreen? It might be the propellants. I have had skin issues this year, every time I apply sunscreen to my face. Started in March. I was trying to be good. I did not link it to the sunscreen until June, but when my face would get these sores that would not heal I would just quit using anything but a homemade cleanser on my face until it would heal up again. Back to you, though--did it start both times in the car? I was wondering if it was some kind of mold, as both places you mentioned had moistness. I sure hope you learn something. Thinking it might be an inhaled allergen, I would wash everything I had been wearing, and that includes not having my shoes in the house, incase the allergen was tracked in. I would seriously deep clean the inside of the car as well. Hope you get to feeling more like your old self soon.

The first time was in the airport, second was in the car. That's why they thought blood clots and did the CAT scan. I always wash everything I take on vacation when I get home - even if I didn't wear it, it was in with the dirty clothes so they all go in the washer. I didn't think about shoes though... But I don't know if that would be much of a worry because I didn't have any problems at all during the 2 months in between the trips... But, it wont hurt to set them outside and let them air out a bit. Thanks :)

How horrible I hope they can find out what is wrong with you. I am wondering if it is is not a blood clot. I have seen them not show up on the cat scan until later. I do not want to scare you. Are you taking any type of blood thinners like aspirin? Your doctor may want to put you on one. I hope by now you are breathing easier and are doing better. I have said a prayer for you.

I've been having the breathing problem for over a week, and it's the 2nd time this has happened. I do have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow morning and it looks like this wont be going away any time soon. Hopefully my doctor can figure it out quickly, this is very annoying.
