its just a shiny yellow soft metal, it has no use at all, why is it so important and expensive, it has non-productive aspect, it gets dug out of the ground in Africa,or someplace. then melt it down, dig another hole, bury it again and pay people to stand around guarding it. it has no utility. Anyone watching from mars would be scatching their head.

Humankind simply decided to consider gold as a valuable substance - and for good reason. It's unreactive and doesn't tarnish, so you can hold on to it for a very long time. Plus, like many other precious metals, it's unaffected by inflation making it a good investment.
