How do you plan a romantic gift for your loved one?

It's easy to choose that perfect romantic gift for a loved one if you just pay attention. Here are some tips.
Step1.Make a list. Throughout the year, notice any items that catch your loved one's attention and mark them down. These items can include books, CD's, jewelry, clothing...anything that strikes your partner's fancy.
Step2.Match the gift to your partner's personality. A serious, scholarly person might love to get that history book that just made the best-seller list. An MP3, CD's or a gift card to download songs would appeal to music lovers.
Step3.Recall other gifts your loved one has received--and his or her reactions. They are signals indicating what you might buy and what you should stay away from.
Step4.Select the proper time to present the gift. Surprises tend to enhance the romance of a gift. Choose a date that is important to both of you, such as the anniversary of your first date.
Step5.Set the mood. Before presenting the gift, arrange a romantic dinner as the prelude. Make the gift part of dessert.

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep these in mind the next time I buy a gift! 
Well I do a lot of personalized gifts for my girlfriend. So far I sew for a plush toy and I made chocolates for her.

These tips were absolutely fantastic. That's exactly what we do. We are very in-tue with eachother's interests, likes and dislikes. My husband loves to read, and on one of the websites that i post to, I am able to receive a number of gift cards to a local bookstore. This has been wonderful, since I hae een ale to get him any ook he wants, and he loves receiving books as gifts.

well i don't really plan anything but whenever i see him looking for the same brand that he visits everytime we got to the same mall each week it motivates me to save more for me to be able to buy him that particular object but i had to change my direction because it did not reach the goal i was about to reach so i bought two pairs instead and good thing he liked it.
i did set the mood and even joked him asking "what if i bought you a comforter, would you still use it? will you like it?" and i can see it through his facial reaction that how would he use something like that with a hot weather we have. then what i did was convinced him that what i was about to give is a comforter. haha. when i handed him my gift which was a bit big and heavy and as he opened it up i saw how happy he was. haha.
