donating school supplies

Its that time of year again. When you go into stores, they have a box waiting for you to donate school supplies. Go into the bank and they have a drawing for a book bag for some lucky unfortunate child. The local tv station and the Salvation Army ask for donations of school supplies. I know its for a good cause but I really get tired of it. I had to buy my kids school supplies when they were growing up and yeah money was tight, but they got what they needed. I often wonder if the parents of these "needy" kids could budget their money a little better, not buy those frivolous things and pay for the school supplies out of their own pockets instead of looking for a handout. Don't get me wrong I know there are kids that need the supplies and I wouldn't dream of letting them down, cause its probably the only new thing they get all year. That smile on their face is worth a thousand words. What do you think? Do you think there are parents out there that eagerly await the free giveaways so they can use their money on themselves? Do you get tired of everyone asking for donations?
