What Is The Real Reason Behind An Animal Chasing Their Tail?

During the course of my life, I have owned a number of cats, dogs, birds, and fish as pets. Throughout this "ownership" period many of the cats and dogs, and one parakeet I had would often chase their tails, going in circles for hours sometimes catching it, sometimes not. Now for the most part I know or can assume this is a form of play for them, but just recently I was given a kitten and the only time he acknowledges that he has a tail is either when one of my adult cats scares him or if he is trying to eat and he happens to move his tail in such a manner it comes into view, he will sit and growl at it and when it don't move he will than proceed in chasing it. So it has gotten me to wonder again what's the purpose of tail chasing. I know we may never know the real reason behind it, but I think it would be fun to read what others may come up with.

I swear my dog chases his tail because he can not figure out what this thing is that keeps following him around. he just looks at and then goes in for the kill and around and around he goes. The look on his face i swear it is saying why cant i catch this thing i have to addmit it is a funny thing to watch. Why they do it i have no idea , if only they could talk i am sure they would tell us.

Indeed, I do get a kick out of watching my animals chase their tails. I think somewhere in my video collection I have one or two videos of just my animals just being plain weird..lol! I wish they could talk to us in a manner we would understand, would not only solve a lot of mysterious things about them, but they would also be able to tell us right off the bat when they weren't feeling good, instead of having to wait until some sort of difference in behavior or mood arose out of them.
