Age or maturity?

Many 18yr olds are doing stupid things that adults wouldn't do. So my question to you is why do we put an emphasis on age? It's 16 to drive, 18 to vote, and 21 to drink. Why?

I am 20 and have no ideal why they put a emphasis on age. I think it should be on actions because i don't act like most 20 years olds. The ones around me shouldn't even be allowed to drive with how much they drink and drive.

I do when i go out with them other then that i just here them talking about how drunk they were and how they almost got in a crash or did get in one. I prefer not to party much but try to go with them to drive them home if i'm not busy studieing.

do you have an obligation to those people who drink and drive to stop them and make sure they are making good choices

why not? don't parents have control over when they let their children drive? they can make the call on if they are mature or not, can't they

Everyone matures differntly. I have a friend who is 23 and acts like a 15 year old. I have another firend who is 20 and more mauture then anyone I know. Age is not a good way to deterime maturity. However we need some set guidlines as the the apporpriate age to work, vote, drive, and drink. ECt.

should parents also monitor this and make sure that if their child is not ready to drive that they don't

I don't believe that people are mature just because they get older. The government puts an emphasis on age so they can have uniformity in society. It says nothing about an individuals maturity. I'm 18 and am a lot more mature than people twice my age that I have met.

but what good is uniformity in society when you allow people to vote, drink, or drive that can't do so responsibly. Should we as a country make the age greater to assure that those people that aren't mature/responsible enough to do these things at the current age(s) are.
