I find it interesting every year at Easter when the catholic church spokes-people come out of the woodwork and talk about remembering the true meaning of easter. I always smile and think back to the true meaning of easter, the feast of fertility. Of course a few hundred years ago the minority catholics leeched onto the fertility festival and used it as an excuse to also celebrate their own feast, that of Jesus dying and rising from the dead. Have you ever wondered about the symbol for easter being the decorated egg, it represents fertility and new life. Have you ever wondered why the dates for easter are set by the phase of the moon and not a set date... again, the pagans, once again setting their festival by the moon. And now the Christians want me to remember the true meaning of easter, well I do remember, I want the priests to remember the true meaning of easter, then maybe they might show a little more tolerance to us pagans, who they have taken so much from..... Like Easter. If you want to learn more about the pagan calender and festivals have a look at http://www.dowhatyewill.com/wiccan_calender. Blessings Diana.

Many Christian holidays were co-opted from the pagans and I'm not sure how many Christians actually know that. In order to convert the pagans to Christianity, the church decided to make it more palatable by keeping some of their customs. Even Christmas is rooted in paganism. There had been a tradition in the West that Mary bore the child Jesus on the twenty-fifth day, but no one could seem to decide on the month. Finally, in 320 C.E., the Catholic Fathers in Rome decided to make it December, in an effort to co-opt the Mithraic celebration of the Romans and the Yule celebrations of the Celts and Saxons. There's a LOT more to it, and most of it is largely political. But I guess my point is that the church claiming pagan holidays as their own is nothing new.
