What pests have bothered you lately?

I have always loved ladybirds. Now, I am not sure if these creatures are really ladybirds; anyway, they look like ladybirds: small, round, and sometimes, spotted. I think they are cute, and we have a cute little superstition regarding them. If you find a ladybird on your person, you will find true love soon. However, when I saw around half a dozen ladybirds feeding on my ladyfinger plants, I was really upset. I had to sprinkle pesticide powder on them to get rid of them, otherwise the plants would have had no leaves left. And I am really fond of those plants. They have already given enough ladyfingers for two servings. And those ladyfingers were delicious. Lol, I just found out from google images that you also call them okra. :) Mine look just like these: http://img.alibaba.com/photo/10071656/Okra_Lady_Finger_.jpg So, do you have them in your garden too? Any pests bothered them? :) Cheers and happy mylotting

where we live we seem to have a problem with earwigs. at other houses i have lived in, i had never had that, but here in this house, we kill dozens of them (and sometimes have to call a pest company).

My friend had the same problem, and when she worked out where they were coming from (under the front room window) she put some insect powder down. I'm not sure if they returned or not since then, but she'd never had this problem before. Hope you get it sorted!

Your okra sounds lovely. It's a shame they've been under attack! I'm having a huge problem with slugs and snails. They have been munching my tomato plants for ages and I was worried about them, but these plants seem to have survived, and are producing a reasonable crop. However, as soon as I try to put some flowers in the ground all the leaves get eaten away and they look a right mess! I just don't think they have any chance. I've tried using coffee grounds and egg shells, which I've seen suggested somewhere, but this doesn't make much difference. And they come every year (well, they're probably there constantly, I only notice it in the summer). So I think that our garden must just attract these slimy things!

Aw, thanks for best response! I hope the pests are under control now.. Our slugs are still out in force, and the egg shells I was using to discourage them attracted a cat or fox or something, who dug up a plant and fouled the flower bed ! Not recommended!! Hope you're having more luck than me, lol!

They might not be a true ladybug, or ladybird as you call them. Here in the south they are raised to combat aphids that are harmful to plants, they eat the tiny bugs that eat the plant. Are you sure it was the ladybirds eating the plant and not some other type of bug? Aphids are very very tiny but can do great damage, and the ladybugs, birds eat the aphids. Anyway yes we have been battling tiny pea ants all summer long, not only in the kitchen but the bathroom as well, we have to be careful not to leave any crumbs or food on the counters, other wise we get swarmed with the tiny irritating insects. We spray around the windows and bricks out out and that helps for awhile.

Hi Angel, I am a bit confused about it myself. These were tiny beetles, red and black in color. But, I also know that ladybirds are carnivorous. So, now I wonder if they were eating something else, maybe the bugs that were really destroying the plants. I am an amateur gardener and I have loads to learn. Cheers and thanks for the response. :)

We had a big problem this summer and the last few summers with Gypsy Moths. They sprayed pesticides to kill some of them because they were getting to be a big problem. When they are catapillers, they have alot of hair and when they landed on people, it would give them rashes. They also ate almost all the leaves off of my Apple Tree. :( They are really nasty little critters! Have a wonderful night!

We have many of those caterpillars here too. :( They love eating the leaves off my runner beans. I just crush them if I see any of them about. Gardening does make you ruthless sometimes, doesn't it? ;) Cheers and thanks for the lovely response.
