Do you eat ampalaya?

Bitter gourd or ampalaya as we call it here in the Philippines is a vegetable that is not so popular with children because of its bitter taste. But it is very nutritious and can even help those people who have diabetes. It can also regulate the amount of blood sugar in the body so aside from curing, it also prevents the disease. There are many herbal supplements now in the market that are made from ampalaya. But instead of taking those supplements, I’d rather just eat the vegetable. My mother keeps on making dishes out of ampalaya the past few days and I am not complaining as in spite of its bitter taste, it can also be made a tasty dish. I love ampalaya mixed with some pork and egg. I also like ampalaya leaves in a monggo dish.

Hie Misshoney, I do like it and especially when made into soup with spare ribs or plain fried with eggs. The soup is really refreshing and 'cooling' to the body system. And no bitter taste at all compared when sauteed as a dish by its own. My bother used to punish his kids when they had been naughty by serving them this dish for dinner. And the kids really hated it. I think it is a very unique vegetable which not many people is aware of its good properties for the health. Cheers,

Truly ampalaya is one of the nutritious foods available locally especially here in the Philippines. I love to eat it now but way back before, my father was really having tough time forcing me to eat that veggie. It was just bitter and nasty to my taste buds. I am so happy I come to love amplaya because of it nutritional benefits; it cures a lot of illnesses particularly diabetic and hypertension, it has also a purifying element that's good for blood circulation and cleansing. Let's all eat ampalaya and be healthy! Happy posting!

Yes you are right, there is nothing better than eating the fresh ampalaya. I love it also. I don't mind whatever is the preparation for as long as it is ampalaya then I would eat. I just wonder why some dislike the bitter taste when the health benefits are countless. Diabetics are getting cured by it and also here are some more benefits: - Alleviate the symptoms of rheumatism and gout and ailments of the spleen and liver. -It also is effective in helping lower the body's blood sugar and blood pressure levels. - Helps to disinfect and heal cuts, wounds & burns - Is useful as a cough & fever remedy - Used in the treatment of intestinal worms and diarrhea - Helps prevent some types of cancers - Helps enhance the body's immune system to ward off infections - Serves as an effective antioxidant, antibacterial & antipyretic agent Have a good day!

I don't know why some people fail to appreciate the delicious bitterness of ampalaya. Everyone knows the facts about its curing power yet, more and more people are still trying their best to avoid the vegetable. If only they'll give Mr. Amp a chance, there is a big probability of them getting acquainted.

i do eat ampalaya sometimes, but if there is other dish, i would choose the other one. hehe.. the taste, it is bitter. no wonder kids don't like it.. but when it is mixed with bagoong, it is delicious plus with some small pork, uhmm,...and i agree, it has many medicinal values.. but on the other hand, it also has some negative effects if you eat it too much.. be balance. stay in balance. that is what i advice.. and sometimes, i ate ampalaya with a lot of water on my side.. hehe.. i just couldn't take the taste...

well firstly the phillipine eqivalent of bitter gourd i.e "ampalaya" is a word which seems something originating from the south indian tamil language.maybe its just a linguistic connection. now talking about the actual vegetable i think that its really a very nutritious vegetable but at the same time i think its bitter taste makes it really really hard to it. i remember what my mother used to do when i was small to make me eat them. she used to first smear one piece or the other in honey and then let us lick a few of them. then she would give us the dreaded vegetable and when feeling bitter on eating she would tell us that the honey thing reappears every time u finish one bitterguard. and thats how i like it till date.

hi misshoney! i hated ampalaya when i was a kid. my mother would always get angry at me whenever i refuse to eat it. i'm anemic ever since i was a kid and so my mother would just feed me anything that can provide me with lots of iron. and she'd get really pissed when i refuse to eat veggies. ^__^;; its just so bitter! i do eat a lot of eggplants then but my mother wasn't happy with it. she said eggplants are not nutritious compared with ampalaya. but i eventually learned to eat ampalaya when i realized its importance and nutritional value. i learned to eat a lot of veggies only when i was in college! i was attending school far from home and i only had myself to take care of me. i realized i needed a lot of nutrition because i can't afford to be sick, no one's gonna take care of me. so i started to eat veggies. ampalaya, monggo, grean leafy vegetables, and a lot more. i now eat ampalaya in any dish as long as there's no chicken or egg or shrimp in it.

HI misshoney, my friend, i donno what ampalaya is but as you have written it is bitter gourd then i love the veg. i love to eat it . i cook the veg in different ways . i make it stuff, chopped, fine chopped and fried. the one which is stuffed i love it the most. i can eat it without any rice or chappati (whole wheat bread).the one which is finely chopped and then deep fried is done so that small kids and many who dont like it because of their bitter flavour can eat it. because it is deep fried its bitterness is not felt that much and because they are very finely chopped that they are very crispy so people can enjoy eating them. it is a very good veggy to eat as it regulates the blood sugar level in one's body.

Hi greenline! i'm joyce, i read ur comment about ampalaya.... i understand u havent tried it but when u've come to taste it first its bitter but as ur used to it bitterness is nothing. Try it and u'll surely like it. It comes with an attitude as u go on eating this vegetable. I suggest u mixed it with other vegies. Are u familiar with "pakbet". Why not try this too? It's delicious and nutritious as well. Happy eating!

The bitter gourd is known as paavakkai here in south india in our state. I too as a kid used to hate it but now knowing its benefits i have come to love it. My mil makes it as a tasty dish.. Can you share with me some simple recipe to cook it with egg. I would prefer it to be vegetarian with egg.. It is that i want my kid to get to like the vegetable. He does not like it the way we make it now ...
