How many people here have ever read these books? They are my favorites, and Piers Anthony (author of the Xanth novels) is one of my favorite authors. The first book, On a Pale Horse, deals with the Incarnation of Death. A man about to commit suicide looks up and sees the spectre of Death, and without thinking, turns the gun on the spectre. Death, being unprepared and not paying attention, falls dead. Zane is amazed that he'd just killed Death. Then, strangely, a middle-aged woman appears and tells him he must now assume the Incarnation, and wear the uniform. This is the beginning of a world of Purgatory, where the Incarnations, who were once human, now in supernatural Offices, live there lives. And handle the lives as mortals. These books have fascinated me for many years. There were 7 books in all (until the new one just came out): On a Pale Horse (Death) Bearing and Hourglass (Time) With a Tangled Skein (Fate) Wielding a Red Sword (War) Being a Green Mother (Nature) For Love of Evil (Evil) And Eternity (Good) And now, Under a Veiled Cloak (Night) These are great books. I encourage anyone to read them, if you love fantasy novels.
