Could you be equals?

I mean with your dog! The maremma is a flock guardian dog bred for independence and quick thinking. They are loyal and brave and are known to kill wolves to protect their home and the livestock on their home. The possible drawback is that they aren't terribly obediant. The operate on a mutual respect sort of basis. Would you be okay with that or would it drive you crazy to have a dog that was independent?

we have an australian shepherd. she's very intelligent. we're operating on a mutual respect basis here already, although sometimes we do have to show her we're dominant dog with some things. right now she is curled up on the couch, cuddled up to a couch pillow with her front legs wrapped around the pillow. she definitely behaves more like an equal and we wouldn't be happy any other way.
