Identity theft - law and punishment against this, what is your input ?

Identity theft happens for real nowadays; that is why users aren't encouraged to publish on line all vital information about themselves. Even your email could be used by spammers to haunt you. If you were to devise a punishment for this "crime", what would you hand out as the penalty or punishment for this act?

Well these days there are so many good hackers that you can't keep yourself fully protected unless you pull out the internet cable :D But I think you should take away their internet rights... That will teach them, it may be hard, but then they will learn it the hard way, implant some sort of chip int their hands that sends a disturbing signal to the pc they are working with.. Sounds difficult but it is possible with our technology, I am sure of that..

While i hate the idea of implants because if we start that then where will it stop? All in the name of our SECURITY.Sound familiar? But NRG you have a point. I think anyone who commits this type of crime knew exactly what they were doing and it took time, planning, and know how. It's completely premeditated .Just like robbing a bank only more insidious because it can take time to detect. There ought to be a national register of cyber criminals and all isp's are forwarded a list of these individuals and can hopefully prevent at least some of this. The penalties for letting someone on the register use your comp should be severe. They should have to wear a bracelet.that clearly would identify them in public and do what you said and the bracelet would and alert the authorities too.

What happens when people steal ids? Or social security cards? Or forge paperwork in another person's name? I think the same should apply.
