What to do for becoming an extraordinary engineer.

Hi I am a 2nd year mechanical engineering student. Many of my classmates have joined some extra ( but common) courses such as autocad, catia etc. But beside doing these courses, I am willing to do something more advance. Can anybody tell me what should I do/join which will give me an edge over other. Please tell me if anybody knows that in future which course will be in demand. Should I associate myself to any company to improve my skills, if so how?
