Yes, it is true. Prophet Mohammad got engaged to his wife Aisha when she was six and consummated the marriage when she was nine years old. If you ask why, they you must go back to medieval Asia and try to understand the lifestyles of the tribal beduins in those days. I don’t know about any theological explanation to it, but the condition of women throughout the world in those times were quite bad.
