About Rating Comments

I'm still fairly new here and beginning to figure things out- but I was just wondering if there are any rules of thumb as far as rating people's comments or discussions. So far I've just hit "plus" on everything that pertains to the discussion or that sounds like thought was put into, and as far as discussions I pretty much plus the ones i respond to and so far I've never hit the minus.... Is this a good way of going about things? I don't know how much rating people's comments helps them, so I don't know that I'm even being generous or if this is the norm... Help? :D Thanks!
