Some of this may be preaching to the choir here, but I am constantly amazed by the number of people who aren't aware of the affects their lifestyles have on the environment. 1. Reduce - THE most IMPORTANT thing. The less you use/consume, the less energy and resources are used making the items/energy. 2. Reuse - Take a finished product and reuse it for its intended use, re-purpose the item in a creative manner, or give it to another person to use (Freecycle is great for this). For instance making plarn of plastic grocery bags. 3. Recycle - Give the items to a recycling company. Plastics, papers, metals, glass, and more can often be recycled into something new with less expenditure of resources than making the item completely from scratch. Recycling means less in our landfills which are rapidly getting out of control.
