A helping hand...

To teach kids the right amount of foods to eat for maximum energy. Let them use their hand.(works for adults to) Make a fist: That represents the amount of carbohydrates you should have per meal. Next spread you fingers wide: The area that your fingers spans is the amount of fruit and vegetables you need. It is okay to have more if you like. Third is to look at your palm: That's how much protein. Last is to make the ok symbol or sign with your thumb and forefinger. That is the limit on fats you need. So what do you think of this system on how to teach children the right amounts? Happy MyLotting!!

Hi Carrieandjohn. It sounds good and I think it would work for fruit and veggies but, how are all the other items you mentioned visually measurable? I've never seen a fist sized amount of carbohydrates. Isn't it mixed in with every thing else. For instance bread is not all carbs it has some proteen and even lactose. Now, protein is even hard to get a grasp on. LOL.

As for bread you would look at it as all the sections it falls into. It is suppose to be a visual aid in helping teach healty eating habits. Protein is like your meats and peanuts. It is just one of the new visual aid to help promote healty eating in kids.

I find little visual aides help with smaller kids. I try to teach my children what is better to eat. I want them to be healthy. I showed it to my daughters kindergarden teacher. She had notice my daughter doing it at school. She now uses it in the class to teach better eating habits. Happy MyLotting!!

It's a nice method, but I do think it's sometimes difficult to use, I mean, for dinner it would work, but for breakfast and lunch it's sometimes not so easy. I teach my children that they can have as much fruit and vegetables as they want all day long, but all the rest is mom's decision. If they want a snack, or a cookie, they have to ask. If they want some fruit they can take it, well the oldest does and then comes to me so I can cut it (they are three and two years old). have a nice day

My oldest loves raw vegetables: cucumbers, carots, lettuce, tomatoes. If they're in the house, they will disappear very fast. Have a nice day

Grapes and carrots are the number one disappering thing in my house. My youngest loves lettuce with ranch dressing. She will eat that over anything. Happy MyLotting!!

Your kids sound like my girls. They love fruit. I can not keep it in the house. Everytime I get it. It seems to disappear before I get any. One of my girls use to eat tomatoes all the time. She would even eat it for breakfast when he rest was have something else. Happy MyLotting!!
