first of all, i have to intention to trigger a verbal war in mylot, i just feel puzzled to notice that US news sites are different from the official sites to show the medal rankings, US show the rankins by the overall number of medals but the other news sites (like the official olympic websites) and sites from other countries like UK (like BBC), they show the rankings by the number of gold medals, do you know why? is it a matter of national egoism or national pride? is there an official ranking system for the results of the olympic games?

It is that way because the US is likely to lose the count when it comes down to Gold Medals, but we might win on overall medals. So of course we are going to use the count that favors us. ;)

Every ranking system I have seen thus far has shown both tallies. I do not know if there is an official system or not. It seems like it would go by totals not just golds but I do not know. I know there have been several events that the us has one more than one medal. Women's gymnastics in the all around for instance they took the gold and silver. Should the girl that took the silver not even count? If not for her teammate winning she very well may have taken the gold. I dont really care either way there are only a few events that I even care about.
