What is the best product to clean woodwork? And what is best to use, a rag or scotch pads?

Hard to say, without knowing what kind of soiling it has, what the wood is and what finish the wood has?

My house is 97 yrs old. It has over 20 yrs of smoke and dirt on it. I think the wood is pine.

use sand paper to finish it. all i know is that they use sand paper to make it smooth. it's color black paper.
