Spelling and grammer pet peeves

What are your spelling and grammer pet peeves - things you make mistakes on and others do? I often switch up letters like hte instead of the. What makes this worse is when I use my husband's computer - his keyboard sticks so I have to be very aware of missed letters from sticky keys or pressing the space bar - but that sticking so words are stuck together! I get irritated when I can't spell words I used to know - I used to be an ace speller in school! Another pet peeve is the use of ect instead of etc. So many people do it though, maybe we ought to decide unanimously to change it. There are other mispellings that I see a lot here on mylot that perhaps should be changed as well - they are used so often! We can have a word revolution. Of course, I can't think of them when I need to! Someone decided how words should be spelled, we can decide as a group to change it! Viva la spelling revolution! Remember that is what a person has to say - not how they say it!

Well, I try to overlook it, because some people know how to write correctly, only they are in a hurry and don't take time to double check. I guess when people use there and their incorrectly it stands out to me. Also, the run on sentences. I don't know if people are aware of when they do that or not. It is kind of hard for me to follow. It can be a five line sentence, all a run on, that actually should be 3 different sentences.

I do the their and they're mix up when I'm in a hurry or tired - along with the other things I mentioned I do up there! I'm also a big run on sentence girl! I try to overlook it too and also, as I say at the bottom, remember that its what people have to say, not how they say it. Some people have perfect grammer and spelling and a large vocabulary but nothing to say, so basically they say nothing with perfect grammer and spelling and a large vocabulary. So would you call the they're and their a peeve? What I find interesting is when there is a website - sometimes big name ones, professional in every way, but full of mistakes. Some of them should have the money to pay an editor. There are some authors too - some that I really like - like Mercedes Lackey whose books are full of mistakes and inconsistencies - so that it pulls me out of the story. Don't publishing companies hire editors?

What do you think of my idea of changing certain words that are so widely spelled "wrong" according to the established spelling (made up by someon). Making the wrong variation correct? "Its a dam& poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word." Bad spellers mantra.

I don't think I've noticed run on sentences with you artemis. I did have someone on my mind when I mentioned it. I have a hard time following her. Sometimes I have to read the paragraph a couple times because it is a paragraph, but it is done in one sentence. So long as I can read someone's discussion, I don't care about the misspellings. I do wish people wouldn't do the UR or B instead of your or be.

I make a lot of mistakes and it bothers me, I consider myself a great speller. I guess I have lazy fingers, because some time I leave out a letter and sometime I hit the letter next to the one I am aiming for. I double check, when I don't I see the mistake but it is too late. I also have spell check I have a dictionary downloaded on my computer for spelling purposes and still make mistakes. I know the keyboard, I know the home keys, I have taken typing lessons, I just make mistakes. And I hate it.

As I say, me too, especially on my husband's comptuter - the keys stick so I skip keys and and even the space bar skips. And I tend to mix up letters sometimes like hte instead of the! I'm a good typist/speller too!

I hate when I see spelling or grammar errors in professional publications, or those put out by a business - don't they care enough to check?

Yes I agree and I see it often.
